What is Botox and how does it work?

Sadly the use of our facial muscles repeatedly throughout our life causes wrinkles and frown lines to develop. In addition to this the slowing down of collagen and elastin production caused by the ageing process means that these lines become permanent as we get older. The muscle relaxing injectable treatment that we use is botulinum toxin, most commonly known as Botox. Botox works by temporarily relaxing the facial muscles and thus reducing their movement. This in turn stops the skin creasing and allows it to recover, causing the lines to soften or even fade away.

Is Botox safe?

Despite all its negative press Botox has been used since the 1970s to treat many medical conditions, including paediatric conditions, such as cerebral palsy and has been used safely with positive effect in far higher doses than are administered in anti wrinkle injections. When treated by a well-trained and experienced clinician Botox is very safe.

Will Botox make me look frozen?

No. Dr Morley prides herself on giving the perfect fresh, natural look which means preserving some movement in the muscles whilst still smoothing out the wrinkles, and avoiding that plastic expressionless look that we sadly see all too often. This is something that takes skill and experience which is why it is so important to choose your practitioner carefully.

Which areas can Botox treat?

Mostly, the top half of face where wrinkles are deepened by smiling and frowning. However, Botox also corrects crow's feet around the eyes, forehead lines, 'bunny lines' around the nose, vertical neck bands, grooves above the upper lip and gummy smiles.

Botox is also a very effective treatment for hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating) in the armpits.

What is the procedure like? Is it painful?

The actual procedure is simple and quick (actual treatment up to 20 minutes). Using a tiny micro needle, a very small amount of Botox, which comes in liquid form, is injected very precisely into the required areas on the face. The needle used is incredibly fine and therefore few patients experience even mild discomfort.

Are there any side effects?

Most are very minor, and include minor redness or swelling around injection sites (resolves within 1-2 hours), less commonly some minor bruising and mild headache. The large majority of patients do not have any noticeable side effects and many return to work straight after the procedure.

How soon will I see the results of Botox?

The effects of Botox have a gradual effect, starting to appear within a few days and reaching optimal appearance at around two weeks. Dr Morley always offers a free consultation at this time where she can give a free top-up treatment if required.

How long do the effects of Botox last?

Each individual is different but on average the effects will last between 3-6 months.

What will happen once the effects of the Botox fade?

Botox is broken down by the body during the first 48 hours so does not accumulate in your system. Effects improve with multiple treatments because the muscle is already relaxed from the previous treatment so the skin is creasing less and the wrinkles are not being reinforced. If you decided not to continue having Botox treatments your face would simply return to how it was prior to treatment, the wrinkles would not be worse.

What is dermal filler and how does it work?

As our faces age we lose volume and that full faced youthful look gradually disappears. The effects of gravity can cause skin to sag and with it lines appear. Dermal fillers are tiny injections of a naturally occurring product in our skin called Hyaluronic Acid. This is what gives our skin its volume and fullness but as we get older the amount of Hyaluronic Acid we produce starts to diminish causing our skin to become dryer and thinner. When injected into to the skin it rejuvenates the face by adding volume, filling and smoothing out targeted areas.

Which areas can dermal fillers treat?

There are many different types of dermal filler and each can be used in different ways and areas of the face to produce the desired effect. Popular areas to treat are:

  • Nasolabial folds (nose to mouth lines)
  • Lipstick or 'smoker's lines' (vertical lines around lips)
  • Marionette lines (running downwards from corners of mouth)
  • Frown lines between eyebrows (normally most effective if botox is used in this area first)
  • Chin indentations
  • Eye laughter lines and crow's feet
  • Lip enhancement and shaping
  • Cheek smile lines & cheek volumisation

When will I see the effects of the dermal filler treatment?

You will see an effect immediately and this then improves as the skin adapts to the filler. Since the hyaluronic acid is hydrophilic, it attracts fluid within the skin and effects are enhanced gradually over the first two weeks.

How long does dermal filler last?

This varies depending on the area treated but generally the effects will last somewhere between 6 and 12 months.

What is the procedure like? Will it hurt?

A small needle is used to inject the filler, which is a gel-like substance, into the appropriate area. All the dermal fillers used by Dr Morley contain a local anaesthetic which means pain experienced is very minimal. The procedure is simple and quick, some areas taking only about 15 minutes, others needing a bit longer. No recovery time is needed and many people resume normal activities immediately after treatment.

Are Dermal Fillers safe?

When treated by a well-trained and experienced clinician dermal fillers are very safe. Only 1 in 20,000 treatments result in an allergic reaction. Horror stories about trout pouts, migration of fillers and hard lumps are only possible with a different type of filler used by surgeons, not the hyaluronic acid ones used by Dr Morley.

Are there any side-effects with dermal fillers?

Most are very minor and related to the actual injecting, not the product itself. These include redness, minor swelling and bruising. If you are prone to cold sores, having a filler injection can sometimes precipitate one.

What will happen once the effects of the filler fades?

This happens very gradually over several months (up to 12 depending on area and type of filler) and the gel is broken down naturally and reabsorbed by the skin. If you decided not to continue having Dermal filler treatments your face would simply return to how it was prior to treatment, the wrinkles would not be worse.

What does the lip enhancement procedure involve?

Dr Morley will inject small quantities of filler into the border of the lips or body of the lip depending on the desired effect. The process can be uncomfortable so topical local anaesthetic will be applied to reduce any discomfort. Also, the filler itself contains anaesthetic. It should take approximately 30 minutes and the effects are instant.

What is the result?

Lip borders can be defined and the shape and size of the lips can be enhanced. This treatment is also ideal for reducing lines and creases around the mouth area (including ‘smoker’s lines’). Results last approximately 6-9 months.

Are there any risks or side effects?

Swelling and redness are common side effects, but such complaints are very temporary and should subside shortly after the procedure.

What to expect?

Often patients don’t realise it is possible to treat this area, but it can instantly freshen and rejuvenate the face in a very natural way and make you look less tired. Filler is injected in the hollow under the eye to soften the depression and smooth out the sunken look of the eyes. A particular type of dermal filler is used in this area and the procedure is surprisingly comfortable as the injections are very gentle and slow and contain an anaesthetic too. Effects are immediate and last around 12 months.

Side effects

In very unusual circumstances the filler can migrate forward in the skin leaving small lumps which usually dissipate over time or can be dissolved with a simple injection. As with any filler it is possible to get bruising but this can usually be covered with makeup.

Which Thread lift is right for me?

You will have a thorough consultation with either Dr Claudia Morley or Dr Crispin Malpas to determine which lift might be right for you. Once you have made your informed decision you can book in for the treatment at a time that’s convenient to you.

Elionce PDO Rejuva Lift Threads

We use the Elionce Rejuva Lift Threads to achieve the desired lift. These threads have bidirectional anchor points that help lift and support the skin. The threads are made of Polydioxanone an absorbable suture material.

They are inserted with a cannula which improves comfort for the client. The insertion points are hidden in the hairline meaning no unsightly puncture points on the face.

Silhouette Soft Thread Lift

These threads use bidirectional cones to achieve their lift. They are made of Polylactic Acid a biodegradable polymer used for many years in Orthopaedics.

How does a Thread lift work?

The Threads are inserted beneath the skin into the muscle and connective tissue layer using a fine needle or cannula. The lifting effect is immediate creating a firmer look with improved structure, lifting jowls and improving the jaw line. The threads stimulate collagen formation enhancing the lift and providing support for up to 18 months.

Which areas can be treated?

The Thread lift is most effective for the Jaw line, Jowls and lower face. We also use it in our Ultimate Eye Package. Here we use threads to lift the brow and combine it with a PLEXR non-surgical Blepharoplasty to banish those annoying hooded eyelids.

Are there any Side effects?

No medical procedure is without risk but thread lifts in the right hands have very few side effects. Some people notice slight bruising or swelling but this can usually be covered with makeup. There can be mild puckering of the skin immediately after the procedure, which normally resolves quickly but in rare cases can last for a few weeks. There is the extremely rare chance of infection.

Please see attached aftercare sheet for more detailed instructions but you should be prepared to restrict facial and mouth movements for 2-3 weeks after the procedure. We will arrange a follow consultation after this time. Some people find our Ultimate Face Lift is what they want and we can discuss and treat any volume loss, for example around nasolabial folds with filler, at this consultation. This holistic approach providing lift to sagging skin with re-volumisation of trouble areas can also be combined with HIFU for the Ultimate improvement.

What to expect?

With age the connective tissue in the face becomes lax, fat pads and subcutaneous tissue resorb leading to volume loss and the facial tissues fall with gravity.

In the Morley Aesthetics Ultimate Face Lift we start with HIFU to tighten excess tissue in the neck and around the jowls. Either at the same time, or once the HIFU has achieved it’s maximal effect around 2-3 months, we can tackle any further sagging around the jowls with threads and replace volume loss in the cheeks and nasolabial folds with dermal fillers. Finally to complete that radiant new look we offer radiofrequency to brighten and tighten the skin and a peel for that final flourish! The Ultimate Facelift is tailored to your specific needs to achieve the look you want. You, just improved!

How does it Work?

HIFU works by focusing ultrasound energy on the deep connective tissue layer which has become lax over time. This energy stimulates collagen production tightening the SMAS layer creating lift. The technology is used in the NHS to treat prostate cancer by heating and killing specifically targeted cancer cells.

Which areas can be treated?

The jowls, jaw line and sagging neck tissue are the most popular areas for treatment but we can also achieve a noticeable tightening effect around the eyes, cheeks and brow.

How long until I see an effect and how long will it last?

The effects of HIFU become fully evident at 2-3 months and last for up to 18 months. Only one treatment is usually required but it can be repeated after 18 months to refresh your look.

Is it painful?

Most patients report no pain but some occasionally report an ache particularly over bony areas, for example the jaw, during treatment.

Are there any side effects?

Ultrasound has been used for over 50 years in medicine and thousands of HIFU treatments have been performed around the world.

Very occasionally some patients report mild redness. However used on the right areas, to the correct depth, with state of the art equipment by highly trained professionals negates any risk. Dr Morley or Dr Malpas will fully discuss the treatment with you face to face and answer any questions you may have before you decide whether to proceed..

Can HIFU replace a facelift?

Although 3D-skinmed is uplifting it is not a facelift. Whilst our procedure will not be as drastic as surgical intervention it is an inviting alternative for those who are not ready for surgery.

Can HIFU be combined with other treatments?

We often combine HIFU with treatments such as Threads and Fillers to enhance the results and offer our Ultimate Face Lift package.

Radiofrequency

Radio frequency works best initially as a course of treatments, usually weekly over 6-8 weeks. Clients often use radiofrequency as part of their skincare regime with a maintenance package after the initial course combined with peels to keep the skin young and fresh. We can also combine it with HIFU to target both deep and superficial layers.

How does it Work?

The radio waves cause heating of the deep dermis and stimulate collagen and elastin production by stimulating fibroblasts resulting in a tightening of the skin smoothing out fine wrinkles and plumping fine crepey skin.

Radiofrequency is really useful as an adjunct to other treatments and can be combined very effectively with Threads, Botox, Fillers and HIFU. With the 3D Skinmed machine we can directly combine micro-needling with Radiofrequency in the same device to rejuvenate the skin. Or if the thought of micro-needling puts you off RF can be used alone.

How long until I see the effect and how long will it last?

Radiofrequency works best as a course of treatments and the effects become evident over 2-3 months. Clients often use radiofrequency as part of their skincare regime with a maintenance package combined with peels to keep the skin young and fresh. We can also combine it with HIFU to target both deep and superficial layers.

Are there any side effects?

Radiofrequency is extremely safe and pain free with only a slight heating sensation. Occasionally patients may notice a slight swelling afterwards but this settles quickly.

There is no downtime with Radiofrequency.

What does the treatment involve?

We will apply a topical anesthetic cream to the skin. Once this has taken effect the microneedling device is moved over the skin causing multiple punctures. The advantage of the 3D system is that it can, if needed, be combined with radiofrequency directly through the micro needling roller enhancing the stimulation of collagen.

Does it hurt?

The topical anesthetic used minimises any discomfort.

Who is this treatment suitable for?

It can be used on all skin types but can cause skin to become irritated particularly in allergic individuals. We will fully discuss any concerns you may have.

Are there any side effects?

Immediately after the procedure the area treated may become red. This will tend to settle over a few days. As with any procedure that punctures the skin there is a risk of infection but this is extremely rare.

What to expect during treatment

The Fire & Ice treatment is a resurfacing treatment. It uses 18% glycolic acid (foaming enzyme peel is 16% so is better for sensitive skin/ anyone with rosacea or other skin problems – your practitioner will advise which one you should have). The top layer of the epidermis is removed but there is no visible ‘peeling’.

It is likely you will feel heat and tingling whilst the peel is in contact with the skin. This can increase after the masque is removed. However, after the neutralization (with the application of the rejuvenating ‘Ice’ masque) the skin calms almost entirely.

What does the treatment involve?

MAXIMUM RESULTS | ZERO DOWNTIME | ANTI –ACNEIC | ANTI AGEING

The Centrepiece of this remarkable system is a combination of two treatment masques; The extremely powerful Intensive Resurfacing Masque is formulated with Sugar Cane Extract (a potent natural source of Glycolic Acid), Retinol (Vitamin A) & Niacinamide (Vitamin B3) whilst the Rejuvenating Masque, formulated with potent antioxidants, Sodium Hyaluronate (Hyaluronic Acid), Aloe Vera, Green Tea, Grape Seed & Rosemary Extract, soothes, hydrates and nourishes. This treatment is complemented by a unique combination of cosmeceutical serums & crèmes to guarantee one of the most effective results driven facials you’ll ever experience.

For those with more sensitive skin we offer the Foaming Enzyme Optimising Treatment facial

RESULTS-DRIVEN | BRIGHTENING | TIGHTENING | CLARIFYING

Designed to revive tired and congested skin, this results driven treatment facial features a powerful yet soothing Foaming Enzyme Masque system, combining papaya & pineapple enzymes with a potent clinical level grade of glycolic acid. This professional treatment produces a luxurious foaming activity while the bio active ingredients exfoliate and deep cleanse the pores to reveal a polished radiant complexion. An intense revitalising masque, copper firming mist and combination of the highest grade pharmaceutical strength complexes and serums are incorporated with a blend of massage techniques to reveal brighter, re-energized and tighter radiant skin.

What is it used for?

Ideal for special occasions, problematic skin, dehydrated skin, uneven complexions, restoring luminosity and hyper pigmentation.

What to expect post treatment

The Fire & Ice (and Foaming Enzyme Peel) is a ‘no downtime’ treatment. This means you shouldn’t experience any significant shedding, prolonged redness, irritation or inflammation. However, in the first 4-6 hours following treatment, the skin may look and feel a little flushed.

Although extremely unlikely the following side-effects can occur with any skin peel: acne breakouts, swelling or puffiness, pigmentary changes, crusting, scaling, blisters and blanching of the skin.

Post treatment Advice

SPF and sun protection is essential for at least 4 weeks after the treatment. Daily use is recommended on a continual basis throughout the year.

Waxing and laser on the face should be avoided for at least 48 hours post treatment.

Avoid heat & exercise that will cause perspiration for the first 12 hours as this will reduce the efficacy of the deep penetrating ingredients.

Avoid exfoliation for one week.

Avoid the use of the ‘active serum’ and the white lightening serum and complex for 2-3 days.

Application of ‘Sheald recovery balm’ is advised if the skin is inflamed to support recovery.

For longer term benefits we would advise using an IS Clinical ‘cleanse, treat, hydrate & protect’ daily regime which your practitioner can advise you on.

Botox stops the sweat glands under the arms from producing sweat. It blocks the message sent from nerves to the sweat glands in the same way it blocks the messages sent from nerves to the muscles that cause wrinkles.

What is the procedure like?

A simple application of iodine and starch highlights the areas needing to be treated, then several very tiny shallow injections are required to apply the botox. Pain is minimal as the injections are so tiny.
